The Minnesota Wild targeted new moms and fans with cell phones in upgrading amenities at the Xcel Energy Center for the 2017-18 season.

The enhancements come on the heels of major, flashy enhancements in recent years, such as the installation of a new scoreboard and the addition of new restaurants and bars inside the arena, team officials say.

This year’s chief enhancements are based on improving customer experience. The team will have available within women’s restrooms on the RBC Wealth Management Club Level (at section C28) and the Bremer Bank Suite Level (near suite 54) a total of five private “Mother’s Rooms” for moms nursing their babies. There previously were two, but the Wild added three more due to interest and demand, says Carin Anderson, vice president of corporate partnerships and retail management with the Wild.

The rooms contain rocking chairs, power outlets and side tables.

“Any mother, regardless of where she is sitting, is welcome to access any of those locations,” Anderson says. “We got those in mid-summer. They’ve been well appreciated so far and we expect they’ll have more and more use.”

The Wild also has made it easier for fans who need a quick charge for their cell phone. For those fans carrying their own charging cable, there now are four USB ports in all the suites, 52 ports between the east and west ends of the facility on the 200 Level and another 48 ports on the 100 Level at the Xcel Energy Warming House.

“We took the approach of bringing power to the people,” Anderson says.

For those without their cables, the team added a total of four charging tables across each seating level, each outfitted with 12 wired cords and one hot spot. And, in partnership with Xcel Energy, the team added a large charging area by Gate 3 that allows fans to deposit their phone, charge it and then retrieve it later.

“They can actually lock it and leave it and then come back and get it in that space,” she says. “We feel we have now taken the next step in the arena as far as a guest experience perspective in being able to provide, in this new day and age, where the phone is pretty essential to folks, allowing them to feel comfortable that there is a way to get it charged.”

Finally, the team replaced much of the arena lighting with LED systems. The team got $150,000 in rebates from Xcel Energy. A total of 232 Sport Light fixtures, 102 Quartz House Light fixtures and 40 HID Work Light fixtures were replaced with LED fixtures as part of the process, which the team expects will result in $52,000 in annual energy savings.

The arena’s MicroLite lighting control system that controls lighting in the bowl, the suite, concourse and work area lighting on TVs also was replaced. The new system from ETC allows team officials to operate lighting from several locations, including remotely.

The Wild played its home opener Saturday night, losing in overtime to Columbus.
